First impressions are crucially important, and so is the feature that most substantially impacts one’s appearance. Nose surgery, also known as “rhinoplasty,” is designed to improve the size and shape of the nose in proportion to the rest of a person’s face. This procedure can also correct breathing problems associated with the nasal passage.
A nose that is out of proportion to the rest of the face detracts from a person’s overall appearance and harms self-confidence. As the central feature of the face, the nose plays a significant role in determining overall facial harmony. Rhinoplasty helps create a nose that is in balance with the rest of the face by correcting the unsatisfactory results of genetic deformities or traumatic nose injuries.
Dr. Aly specializes in primary, revision, and ethnic rhinoplasty.
How Can Rhinoplasty Improve My Nose?
Rhinoplasty is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures because of its ability to enhance facial harmony.
Nose surgery can effectively:
- Reduce or increase the overall size of the nose in some patients
- Smooth out bumps and/or depressions on the bridge of the nose
- Narrow or widen the bridge of the nose
- Change the size, shape, and angulation of the tip of the nose
- Widen or narrow the size of the nostrils
- Adjust the angle between the nose and upper lip
- Straighten the septum to improve breathing
Rhinoplasty Methods
A patient’s primary rhinoplasty is their first nose surgery when their nose has never been operated on before. As this procedure is very nuanced and requires precise technique, the most minor surgical changes can have an enormous impact. Therefore, rhinoplasty must be handled with great care. Primary rhinoplasty is the best chance of getting things in proper alignment compared to revision rhinoplasty.
Open Rhinoplasty
- Performed under general anesthesia
- Incisions are made across the central nostril skin as well as the inside of the nose
- Allows the most visibility for the surgeon during the procedure
- Generally used for more extensive revision or more complicated procedures
- It is like working on the engine of a car with the hood opened
Closed Rhinoplasty
- Performed under either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia
- Incisions are made on the inside of the nose
- Shorter surgical and recovery time
- May be ideal for less extensive revision or more simple cases
Other Rhinoplasty Options
If ideal results are not achieved with primary rhinoplasty, a revision rhinoplasty procedure may be needed. In a secondary procedure, the surgeon must take alternative methods to remedy prior issues and create an appealing aesthetic.
Although Dr. Aly also specializes in ethnic rhinoplasty procedures designed to address the anatomy and desires of various ethnic groups, he also specializes in primary and secondary rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty FAQs
-
Will I have any pain or discomfort during the rhinoplasty procedure?
No. Anesthesia is administered throughout the entire rhinoplasty process, so patients do not have to worry about feeling any pain or discomfort during surgery.
-
How long does nose surgery take to complete?
Nose surgery generally takes two to four hours to perform, although the exact amount of time needed for surgery will depend on the specific required corrections. Dr. Aly can provide patients with a more specific timeframe once a surgical plan has been created and agreed upon.
-
Will I be able to go home after the surgery is complete?
Rhinoplasty is usually performed on an outpatient basis, so most patients are cleared to go home after surgery. However, because you will still be under the effects of anesthesia after surgery, you will need someone to drive you home.
-
Will rhinoplasty leave scarring?
Surgical procedures that require incisions generally leave some extent of scarring. However, rhinoplasty incisions will be placed inside the nose or on the columella (the skin bridge on the underside of the nose between the nostrils) to ensure scarring is as inconspicuous as possible. In most cases, this is not even visible after a few months.
-
When will the stitches be removed?
Dr. Aly utilizes absorbable stitches, which do not need to be removed. The only stitch to remove is the one that holds a “splint” that is sometimes placed on the inside of the nose if the septum (the wall between the two sides of the nose) is operated on. That stitch is typically removed six or seven days after surgery.
-
Will I have a cast on my nose after surgery?
An external nasal cast will most often be placed on the bridge of the nose. This serves to support the healing nose and will help keep it in its new shape. This cast will be removed in six to seven days.
-
Will I have packing in my nose after surgery?
Dr. Aly does not utilize packing in the nose, which typically results in a more comfortable early recovery period as patients find it easier to breathe.
-
How long does it take to recover from rhinoplasty?
Most patients will need about one week of downtime to recover from rhinoplasty, after which time most feel well enough to return to work. However, strenuous exercises and physical activities should be avoided until your surgeon determines that your nose has healed properly at a follow-up appointment.
Rhinoplasty requires post-operative appointments with Dr. Aly to assess your healing process and to remove the cast. Additionally, Dr. Aly will provide you with specific post-operative instructions on how to care for your nose after rhinoplasty.
-
Is rhinoplasty recovery painful?
The first few days after rhinoplasty usually hold the most discomfort. Patients can expect to experience bruising, swelling, and minor bleeding. Dr. Aly can provide instructions on what pain medications are acceptable to help you through the early stages. After the first few days, your nose should feel less uncomfortable, and as swelling progressively lessens over the next few weeks, you will feel more like yourself again.
-
When can I expect to see results?
The results of nose surgery will become more evident as the swelling goes down over the coming weeks and months. Most patients can see some improvement once the cast has been removed, but it may take up to a year to see the final results of your rhinoplasty. Continue to care for your healing nose by avoiding dangerous activities as it heals.
-
Will my rhinoplasty results be permanent?
Rhinoplasty is a permanent cosmetic procedure that alters and improves the nose’s appearance. Barring subsequent injury or breaks to the nose, your results will last a lifetime.
-
Are there any age limits for rhinoplasty patients?
Rhinoplasty is one of the few cosmetic procedures that can be performed on patients in their teens. However, most plastic surgeons will not perform rhinoplasty on a patient who is younger than 15 years of age or whose nose has not finished developing. If a rhinoplasty is performed on patients too young, their noses will continue to grow and develop and may affect the results.
